Putting the garden to bed...

With the last jobs now done, we finished putting the garden to 'sleep' for the winter months.  Conkers are all picked up, hedges trimmed and most of this year leaves swept by the high winds!  With a gloomy start to this morning, the afternoon was gloriously bright and sunny.

A lot of the apples are picked but there are still a few trees that are late ripening.  I also spied a lot of red berried holly branches ready for my Christmas wreaths for the entrance doors.
.

 Nearing leafless.

Extreme free range Sundays and a bone for a puppy, a towel was put down but it tastes so much better on the grass!

  1. My old boy won't eat his bone on a mat or towel either. Not sure why they don;t like that.

I wish I had holly to pick from trees. We pay about $6.00 for a sprig here.

    1. Hello Chania,
A dog thing then! He was very happy, even if there is only a bit of chewing - it's the marrow he wants! As for the holly, I would say come over and get some but a bit far! We also had masses of mistletoe when we arrived, which costs a lot in the UK. It's a bad sign for the tree, so we have very little now. Happy your water was turned off!!

  2. What a beautiful piece of property you have!

I've never heard chestnuts called conkers before but I think I figure out how they got that name :-)

    1. Hello Laura,
Thank you, sweet chestnuts are the ones we can eat and horse chestnuts or conkers are use in medicine (what we have). Maybe it's a UK thing? We need to plant a sweet chestnut tree, chestnuts are so good for the Christmas stuffing!

  3. What a beautiful garden. Please tell me you have a gardener to help with all that land! I love putting the garden to bed for winter, partly because (apart from planting bulbs) it means I don't have to think about gardening until spring so there is more time to hide indoors and knit.

    1. Hello Gillian,
Thank you, we have 'hedge cutter' help, but that's about it - note there is a lot of green, so mostly lawn mowing!

  5. Conkers....very appropriate name for those falling chestnuts!!

The apples look ready from here. What kind are they? They look like our local Macs.

Aston knows what he likes. Sophie will actually wait for me to put down the towel before she starts her chewing. Such a good girl! lol

    1. Hello Jim,
It's a Brit thing! Chestnuts are what we eat and conkers are what we have and can't. Used in medicine but we don't have enough to interest the pharmaceutical companies (we tried!). These apples are nearly ready, but there are other varieties that are still rock like!! I will have to look up in our 'logbook' of trees to find out which they are.
