I took this picture this morning. There are five roses in bloom at the front of our house. Very unusual for this time of year (-5° c this morning). The leaves are not too happy, but the buds seem to be thriving.
How lovely! The contrast of those red roses against white snow will be like something out of a fairy tale. It's very cold here too, -4 this morning and not getting above freezing all day. Brrr!
Hello, It is strange as there are five other bushes in the same place and it is the only one that flowered. I have to add the lady who sold us the house (her grandfather built it), passed away just before Christmas and the rose was just in bud then. I know she loved this rose as it had the strongest perfume... Hope you are doing well. Ivan
What a lovely surprise for you to find on a chilly winter morning! Do you ever gather the rose hips and use them in cooking? My great aunt Nan was always making rose hip jelly. Have a good day!
Hello Louise, I haven't collected rose hips before, mainly as we cut them back before they form! I shall try to remember this year. I have had some jam before which was nice and I also like the sound of it. Ivan
Dar Ivan, It's that winter sun I suppose, heating the wall and providing a micro climate. There is something very romantic about roses flowering in winter I think. Meanwhile over here on the German border, not only do we have a top temperature of -2 but snow has covered everything! Kirk
Hello Kirk, Yes, the wall helped - the strange thing was only one of the five bushes flowered. I am just pleased for some colour! We still have no snow, a dusting Monday (that melted two hours later) but we are due some tomorrow. We are right on the line again on the weather map, except the other side this time. Hope you are able to get around safely? Ivan
What a great 'gift' to get any time, Ivan! But particularly in January. Very symbolic as well in memory of the lady who planted it. Have a great weekend. Jim
Unusual, indeed! It must be all the heat reflecting from the brick wall. A lovey surprise. Have a great weekend, Ivan. What will you be cooking, my friend? ;-)
Hello Loi, It was a nice surprise, but why just that one and not the others is the mystery!! I am roasting some confit of duck with potatoes in goose fat as I type.... Have a good weekend also. Ivan
I have very fond memories of the roses in Eastbourne from this past June. Thanks for the memory! "Recall a happy memory as often as you like, you can never wear it out."

How unusual Ivan! You are chillier than we are...this is magical! I am very superstitious, and I say this is a sign of something wonderful!

My goodness! this must be a sign that she is safe and well....and that you are meant to be the caretaker of her family home.
DeleteThe rosebushes are very hardy and strong. Enjoy your roses, put a bit of spring in your home. Greetings.
ReplyDeleteHello,
DeleteThank you, I shall enjoy them and wish for spring!

You are a lucky man!! Roses in January!!
ReplyDeleteMarina
Hello Marina,
DeleteYes, very lucky - especially unusual for Normandy! Thanks for stopping by.
Ivan
That's wild, Ivan. My mom used to get her first roses on my May birthday. Oh, but according to some, there is no such thing as climate change.
ReplyDeleteHello Harriet,
DeleteIt has been mild up until now... snow today!! Hope you are doing well! Have a good weekend, what you up to?
